The Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum offers visitors a glimpse of the forest history of Alexandra and the surrounding Rubicon Ranges. The mountains around Alexandra are among the most rugged in Australia, and up until the 1939 bushfires, horse-drawn trams, then steam and finally diesel locomotives had the task of hauling hundreds of tonnes of timber through the steep Rubicon Forest to Alexandra.
Preserving relics of an era before the advent of sealed roads and motor vehicles, when rails represented the only reliable means of transport, the museum’s collection is housed in the original railway station buildings, and includes in its display the first diesel engine built in Victoria in 1935, the Kelly & Lewis.
The Museum is situated in Station Street, Alexandra and is open on the second Sunday of each month and runs steam, petrol and diesel locomotives on a 600 metre loop. Refreshments are available, sausage sizzle lunch, or undercover barbecues are also available. For enquiries phone 0427 509 988.
